COACHING MESSAGE - Mental Training

While we are unfortunately taking a forced break from the racquetball courts it does not mean that we have to stop training. We can take this time while off court to work on our mental game, research shows that visualization practice is just as important in pro athletes as physical practice.  Here is a racquetball visualization exercise from Coach John....

Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed....

Breath in through your nose and out through your mouth, clear your mind, breath slowly and start by focusing on your breath only. Clearing your mind is not that easy to do, stay focused.  After a few minutes start to visualize yourself in a practice situation. Your elbow is high and set, focusing on the ball like an eagle on its prey.  Begin your stroke starting at the back knee, hip turn, core muscles pulling through from the front of your body.  Your elbow begins to come down and forward and the elbow leads your arm, finally coming through and contacting the ball making a perfect kill shot down the line....Now do the Back Hand....

Build up to visualizing for 10 minutes if you can. Visualization is about 70% as effective as physical practice.  You can also visualize yourself in a game, moving gracefully across the floor, tracking the ball, getting into position with a perfect stance and swing through making different shots.

More to come from Coach John...
